Moth Identification Quiz - Introduction

Introduction

It's time to hone your moth identification skills and hopefully have a bit of fun at the same time.

To take part in the quiz is quite simple - you will be shown pictures of moths and you just have to put (guess?) the right name to the moth. Before starting the quiz you can select whether moth images should be limited to macro-lepidoptera or micro-lepidoptera or should include both. You can also specify whether adult, larval or both types of pictures should be used in the quiz. The quiz is limited by what pictures are available on the web site so as a result there are not many micro-lepidoptera larval pictures.

Follow the link below to start the quiz. After the selecting the type of pictures to show click on the 'Start' button. When the quiz is started a picture will be displayed. Select the name of the moth from the picklist below the photograph and click the 'Check answer' button. You will be told whether your answer is correct or not. If you want to give up and find out the name of the moth click the 'Give up' button. Once you have either answered correctly or given up then clicking on the 'Next picture' button will display the next picture.

If you want to re-start the quiz click the button 'Re-start', which will allow you to change the settings for the quiz before you to start again.

The score is listed as a percentage of correct answers to pictures shown.

If you have comments on the quiz (especially ideas for improvements) then I would be interested in hearing about them.

Note: For this quiz to work javascript must be enabled in your web browser. It will not degrade gracefully if javascript is disabled.

Technical note: This quiz was developed so that I could familiarise myself with Ajax, a web technology that offers features for a more interactive user experience when viewing web pages. I'll be tweaking the quiz and adding some further features in the not too distant future.
